 Selection

The child's ingenuous round eyes gazed unabashed into Sophie's vexed ones.

She'd had a hell of a fight with Jerry. Now she fumed over the lack of selection in the produce aisle. Just my luck. And now this weird kid won't stop staring at me.

She glared back at the little boy. He sat in his mother's shopping cart, sucking his dirty thumb. On a whim, Sophie stuck out her tongue. For a rueful moment, she thought he might cry or pitch a fit. Instead he beamed an unaffected smile.

On the drive home, Sophie resolved to throw Jerry out.
